As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This touches home very much as on November 10, 2007, I lost my mother to Breast Cancer.

Each day that goes by there is always a reminder of what I am missing out on with my mother not being here, and thinking of what she is missing out on and wondering what it would be like for her to be a part of my life today. Being a mom to 2 1/2 year old Sierra, there are so many firsts that I wish my mother could see. I wish that she would have the chance to hold her and develop a relationship with her. I also realize each day that the only memory that Sierra will have of her grandmother is the stories I tell her and the pictures I show her. Thankfully, there are many, and there are also characteristics that Sierra shows that are definitely from my mom, which always bring a smile to my face.

I encourage all women to spread the word and do all that you can, that awareness and early detection are the key to saving a life. Make sure that you:

1) Schedule and keep your yearly physical appointments

2) Perform self breast examinations at home to help detect lumps or abnormalities

3) Exercise and eat right as extra weight can be a contributor to breast cancer

There are so many organizations that help raise awareness and funds for this important topic.
